The Tears of La Salette: Heaven’s Cry for Our Times By Jesus4UsAll.com Editorial Team
On 19 September in 1846, Our Blessed Mother appeared to two children in La Salette, France. She shared many revelations, and her final words were:
‘‘Now, my children, you will make this known to all my people.”
Mary repeated these final words, then stopped, ascended about a yard in the air and disappeared. That evening, when the children returned home, they told what had happened. The first visitors to the scene remarked that a spring had arisen where Our Weeping Mother’s feet had rested.

A Cry on the Mountain
High in the French Alps, on a cold 19 September day in 1846, two shepherd children — Maximin Giraud, 11 years old, and Mélanie Calvat, 14 years old— were tending cattle when a light brighter than the sun appeared. Within it stood a beautiful woman clothed in dazzling light, seated on a stone, her face buried in her hands, and weeping.
When she rose and spoke, her words were both sorrowful and urgent.
She said she was the Mother of God, and she had come to warn and to call her children back to her Son.
“If my people will not submit, I shall be forced to let go the arm of my Son. It is so strong, so heavy, that I can no longer hold it back.”
The woman wept as she spoke of how faith had grown cold, how people worked even on Sundays, and how they took the Lord’s name in vain. She lamented the sins that had wounded the Heart of her Son — yet she also promised mercy and renewal if her people would repent.
It was the message of La Salette, approved by the Church in 1851, and it remains one of the most urgent and compassionate calls Heaven has ever given to the world.
The Message of La Salette
and Its Echo in Our Times Though nearly two centuries have passed, the world described by Our Lady of La Salette has become the world we now live in. The core of her warning remains shockingly relevant perhaps even prophetic for this generation.
Let us listen again to what she said, and see how her words mirror our age.
- A Call to Conversion and Repentance
“If my people will not obey, I can no longer hold back the hand of my Son.” Mary’s weeping is not the weeping of anger but of love and mercy. She sees final the spiritual ruin that sin brings upon her children — and she pleads before the justice of God for mercy.
Today, we see sin no longer recognised as sin. Moral relativism has replaced conscience; evil is often celebrated, and holiness mocked. The voice of Our Lady of La Salette is the echo of John the Baptist:
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 3:2)
It is also the cry of Christ Himself: “Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” (Luke 13:3)
Our Lady’s message remains a call to personal conversion — to confession, prayer, and reconciliation — for individuals, families, and nations alike.
2 . The Loss of Faith and Reverence At La Salette, Mary lamented that people no longer attended Mass or kept the Lord’s Day She said: “Only a few old women go to Mass in the summer. The rest work all day Sunday, and in winter, when they know not what to do, they go to Mass only to mock religion.”
This prophecy has matured. The Lord’s Day has become an ordinary day for commerce and entertainment. The Holy Name of Jesus, once reverenced, is now used casually or even profaned.
Scripture warned us:
“The time will come when people will not endure sound teaching… and will turn away from listening to the truth.” (2 Timothy 4:3–4)
Mary foresaw a spiritual famine — not of bread or water, but of faith itself (cf. Amos 8:11). And yet, she weeps not in despair but in hope: for even one heart that turns back to God can draw down oceans of grace.
3 . Suffering, Calamities, and the Consequences of Sin
Our Lady spoke of famine, failed crops, and hardship — not as divine punishment for its own sake, but as a wake-up call to a forgetful people.
In our own time, we see:
- Natural disasters increasing in frequency and force.
- War, moral confusion, and the collapse of peace.
- A “famine” of truth and love, leaving many anxious and
The Bible often connects such times of turmoil to humanity’s rebellion against God:
“Because lawlessness is increased, the love of many will grow cold.” (Matthew 24:12)
Mary’s message helps us understand that these sufferings are not meaningless. They are Heaven’s merciful alarms — a chance for humanity to awaken, repent, and return to God before it is too late.
4. The Church and Apostasy
In her longer, private “secret,” Mélanie reported that Our Lady warned of division, apostasy, and moral decay within the Church. While parts of that text were not officially approved, the Church recognises that the mystery of iniquity (2 Thessalonians 2:7) would indeed grow even within God’s household. We see this today — confusion, scandal, and loss of faith even among some who were once shepherds of the flock.
Yet, even here, Mary’s tears are not hopeless. She points to the purification of the Church, not its destruction. For Christ Himself promised:
“The gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18)
The purification we endure now is the path to resurrection — just as Calvary preceded Easter.
5. The Hope & Promise of Renewal Perhaps the most overlooked part of La Salette’s message is its radiant hope. Mary promised that if people repented, blessings would overflow:
“If they are converted, stones and rocks will change into heaps of wheat.”
This is the Gospel in miniature — mercy triumphing over judgment (James 2:13). Our Lady does not call us to despair, but to conversion and peace. Every Hail Mary prayed, every confession made, every act of charity given with love helps to dry her tears.
Echoes of La Salette: Fatima and Akita
La Salette was the first great cry of modern times. But Heaven would repeat the message again and again, in other lands and tongues, with increasing urgency.
- Fatima (1917, Portugal): Mary warned that sin would bring war, persecution, and suffering. She called for the Rosary, penance, consecration to her Immaculate Heart — a renewal of La Salette’s call for repentance and “The Holy Father will suffer a great deal. I will be with him until the end”.
- “In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph.”
- Akita (1973, Japan): The Virgin’s statue wept human tears, and she warned that fire would fall from the sky if humanity did not repent — y et she also promised protection for those who pray the Rosary and remain faithful to God.
These are not different messages, but one continuous appeal from a Mother who refuses to give up on her children.
A Word for Our Generation
Our Lady of La Salette is speaking again — not with new words, but through the unfolding of history. Her tears are falling still, over a humanity that has forgotten its Creator. Yet her call is filled with hope, for she knows the mercy of her Son has no limit.
This is the time to:
Return to Confession and the Eucharist.
Keep the Lord’s Day holy and honour God’s Name.
Pray the Rosary daily for peace and conversion.
Offer acts of reparation for sins committed against the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts.
Be living witnesses of mercy and truth in a darkened world.
“Return to me, and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts.” (Malachi 3:7) The message of La Salette is not just about avoiding chastisement — it is about entering into the merciful Heart of God, who longs to heal a wounded world.
Heaven’s Final Appeal
The tears of Mary are not the end of the story. They are the beginning of healing.
If we respond with prayer, repentance, and love, even the darkest prophecies can be turned into dawn.
“Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you.” (Jeremiah 29:12)
La Salette is not a relic of the past
— it is a mirror of our times, and a call to every heart.
The Weeping Mother on the mountain still pleads for us to turn from sin, to love her Son, and to prepare for the triumph of mercy.
The time for indifference has ended.
The time for conversion is now.
“APOSTLES OF THE LAST DAYS – PREPARE FOR BATTLE!”
Our Blessed Mother instructed the faithful of these days at La Salette with this battle cry:
“Finally, I call on the Apostles of the Last Days, the faithful disciples of Jesus Christ who have lived in scorn for the world and for themselves, in poverty and in humility, in scorn and silence, in prayer and mortification, in chastity and in union with God, in suffering, and unknown to the world.
It is time they came out and filled the world with light. Go and reveal yourselves to be my cherished children. I am at your side and within you, provided that your faith is the light which shines upon you in these unhappy days. May your zeal make you famished for the glory and the honour of Jesus Christ.
Fight, children of light,you, the few who can see. For now, is the time of all times, the end of all ends.”
