The feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary on 7 October used to be called the feast of Our Lady of Victories, celebrating the victory of the Battle of Lepanto in 1571

St Pius V established the feast of Our Lady of Victory (now known as Our Lady of the Holy Rosary) to thank God for the Christian defeat of the Muslim Turks at Lepanto on 7 October 1571.

Realising that the small fleet of Catholic ships was at a distinct disadvantage against the much larger fleet

of the Ottoman Empire, the Holy Pope called upon all of Europe to pray the Rosary for victory. Christians gathered in villages and towns to pray as the sea battle raged.

The toll of the sea battle was great for the Holy League, but the Turks lost much more: their fleet was destroyed! At the hour of victory the Pope — who was hundreds of miles away at the Vatican — is said to have got up from a meeting, walked over to an open window exclaiming “The Christian fleet is victorious!” and shed tears of joy and thanksgiving to God!

This epic victory which happened through the intervention of Our Lady, prevented the Muslims from overcoming Christian Europe. Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for us, help us to achieve the restoration of a Christian Europe for the glory of God.
