<title>HAPPY FEAST DAY OF ST AUGUSTINE TODAY! AND ST MONICA YESTERDAY!

*Brief overview of St Monica and her son St Augustine of Hippo — whose feasts the Church celebrates on 27 August (Monica) and 28 August (Augustine):*

*St Monica* (c. 331–387)

Early Life: Born in Tagaste (modern-day Algeria) into a Christian family.

Marriage: Married Patricius, a pagan official of hot temper. Through patience and prayer, she helped lead him to conversion before his death.

Motherhood: She had three children, the most famous being Augustine. She suffered deeply as Augustine strayed into a worldly, restless life.

Persevering Prayer: Monica prayed and wept for years for Augustine’s conversion, often seeking the counsel of bishops. One famously consoled her: “The child of so many tears will not perish.”

Final Years: She followed Augustine to Rome and then Milan, where he was finally baptized by St Ambrose in 387. Shortly afterward, on their way back to North Africa, Monica died in Ostia.

Legacy: Remembered especially as a patron saint of mothers, wives, and those praying for family conversions.

*St Augustine of Hippo* (354–430)

Youth: Born in Tagaste, North Africa. Brilliant student, he pursued worldly ambitions and lived a restless life. He had a long relationship outside marriage and a son, Adeodatus.

Search for Truth: For years he explored philosophies and religions (notably Manichaeism), while his mother prayed tirelessly for him.

Conversion: In Milan, influenced by St Ambrose’s preaching and the Scriptures, Augustine experienced a profound conversion. In 387, he was baptized by Ambrose at the Easter Vigil, with Monica by his side.

Priest &#038; Bishop: Returned to North Africa, became a priest in 391, and later bishop of Hippo (Annaba, Algeria). He preached, defended the faith against heresies, and guided the Christian community for decades.

Writings: One of the greatest Doctors of the Church. His Confessions (his spiritual autobiography) and The City of God are among the most influential Christian works ever written.

Death: Died in 430 during the Vandal siege of Hippo. His relics were later transferred to Pavia, Italy.

*Their Story Together*

Monica’s steadfast love and intercession brought Augustine from a life of wandering to one of the greatest saints and thinkers of Christianity. Their feasts are side by side in the calendar — a mother’s prayers on one day, the son’s conversion and holiness on the next.</title>
